I was asked to write a reflection of my journey and experience studying abroad. I believe I set out to do the program to find myself, discover who I am and what I believe in- by seeing how others live and different cultures around the world. Throughout my life so far I have traveled around the USA, Canada, Mexico, and the Virgin Islands, but never to Europe. I was so grateful to have this opportunity to go somewhere different, where I could experience things outside my comfort zone and se how I would react and adapt to them.

Denis Waitley once said, “A dream is your creative vision for your life in the future. You must break out of your current comfort zone and become comfortable with the unfamiliar and the unknown.” I have always had a strong vision for my future and I can say after this program my vision has never been more clear. There is alway something scary about going into the unknown, but I have learned once you take that leap into it you come out learning and knowing much more. I have enjoyed seeing a different way of education, teaching, and interacting with others.

Seeing how people are in the UK v the US is interesting. I have definitely seen a difference in people and personalities. In a vague and general statement, I feel people in the UK can take “banter” and do not overcompensate in complements or stating appreciation, yet they treat everyone and their mother’s -best friend's - brother-in-law- with respect and care. Whereas Americans can come off as rude and brash yet are not meaning to be, they are just being more to the point. It was interesting adapting to the difference in way people act, but I know it has taught me to take sarcasm in a different light and truly appreciate when a great deed is done.

Studying fashion and business you are told what a true innovator is, what luxury is, fashion, style, grace, elegance, success, etc... but through this experience I have been able to formulate my own opinions and definitions for several things. Being and living in a different culture and society has let me blend ideas and ideologies to become more of an innovator and risk taker in my personal and professional life.

This all went by way too fast. I have really learned to live in the moment and stop worrying about what is next. I know that the only thing I can control is the here and now and I must appreciate every minute of it. I have always been one to think for myself, aloud. As Coco Chanel once said ”The most courageous act is still to think for yourself. Aloud.” One thing I that has become much more clear to me is that I have a strong personality, that one day will be great in an board room and as a leader of a company. In addition I can really hear and listen to what others are saying without bias, by doing that it allows a successful and progressive conversation to formulate.

I would highly recommend this program for those ready to take on the unknown. In order to do this successfully I believe you need to be strong, independent, determined, and extremely hard working. This program is not easy. It is a lot of independent work and many people trust you will figure it all out on your own. When it is all said and done you discover how to do things and will come out a more mature person, ready to take on whatever life throughs at you.

It offers many vendors who sell great antiques, vintage, and collectables. I went to it I got to experience the craziness of the hustle and bustle. The market and street are lined with colors and filled with energy. The market is great for people watching. There are some interesting characters to spot while you walk through it. A lot of talented artist also contribute to the amusement of the market. One section is lined with food vendors who sell anything from traditional food to food from around the world. It is a must see for anyone visiting the UK!
This past Sunday I took a day trip to Bristol to visit Liam's sister. His sister was an amazing tour guide! I got to see a new part of the UK and another school. One of our first stops was The Matthew on Bristol's harbor side. It was a cool experience to be on the Matthew, it felt like we were children playing on a pirate ship. One of my favorite parts of Bristol was seeing all the amazing street art. London Fashion Week was more than I ever imagined! It was incredible. LFW is so much different from New York Fashion week. All the people are so posh, fashion forward, and knowledgeable. New York Fashion Week has a strange mix of people and people who want to be in the fashion world, but cannot quite figure out their own style. There are two main tents for shows and inside Somerset House there are exhibitions. The exhibitors are designers and the set up a space to show their new collection. You need a special pass to have access to them, it is mostly buyers and photographers who can go and see the new collections. I was lucky enough the get a pass from my internship because they were showing. Everything at LFW is very exclusive. I really enjoyed being able to see how fashion week worked in another country. It was interesting to compare it to New York. I meet some really cool people and was able to expand my horizons in the fashion industry. Even people watching was beyond words when I stood outside the tents. I cannot wait to go back for another season!

I have realized how fortunate I am to have this opportunity, that many others do not get. I have also started to make a list of places I want to go while I am here.

One thing I did was go and see the Valentino: Master of Couture exhibit at the Somerset House. It was unbelievable to see over 130 divine haute couture designs worn by icons over the past decades. The installation was breathtaking. It is set up like a runway and allows the viewer to get close to all the garments. It was inspiring to see Valentino's work. I cannot believe how much he has accomplished so far. It really proves that anything is possible.

I am really enjoying my time so far. London is such an amazing city. It reminds me of a BIG New York, which is cleaner and where the people have better accents.

I have completed my first official week of school and my internship. School was great. It was interesting to see how it works in a different country. My grade is based off of one paper and one group project for each class. I am taking London Fashion, Commercial Skills, and Luxury Brand Management. All of my classes seem like topics I will enjoy. I am ready to start learning more in depth about each of them. The class size on average is 45 people, and coming from FIT that is really big. In two of my modules I have 2 teachers per class. It is a lot different from school in the States. School is more relaxed and the teachers depend on you to get the work done on your own time, all you do is turn it in at the end of the semester. I like independent learning, it allows you to research more of what you are interested in, rather than what the teacher tells you to do.

Working at Paper has been a dream so far. I love the people I work with and the company. It is absolutely amazing to see every aspect of developing a new brand. I am excited to participate in fashion week. Paper will be showing at New York, London, and Paris. All the people I work with are young and well rounded in the fashion industry. It is great having a boss willing to share her knowledge with you. I hope to work in the high-end market when I graduate, so Paper is a perfect fit for me.

This weekend the weather has been freezing and snowy. People do not handle snow well here, almost everything shuts down. I got to see the London Science Museum and the V&A . The Science Museum had a cool exhibit called Energy: fuelling the future. The V&A had a wonderful Fashion Exhibit.
It was only 1.5 days long and finished with a cruise around London. It covered the basics of school and answered our questions. The cruise was a great way to meet new people and to see London. After the cruise my friends and I went to a place called Fischer's Hell around the corner. It was nice to have a night out in London and hang with locals. We all came to the conclusion that the people here are much nicer than the people in New York. They invited us to come to there table and told us all the cool places to go in London. We all had a great night.
I have 5 other people in my hall. I have not met them yet, they move in next week. I am still settling in and will share pictures when my room is complete.

Sunday I explored the city. London is amazing! Liam showed me around. We went to The Houses of Parliament, saw Big Ben, the London Eye, 10 Downing Street, Trafalgar Square, Buckingham Palace, Leicester Square, and Camden Town. I got to ride on a double decker bus. It was a great getting to live like a tourest and experiencing all different things around the city. I am looking forward to doing many more things around London.
Today I explored the city of Manchester. It was so fun! I went with Liam and we walked around the stores and he showed me the local attractions. It was raining hard all day, but I wanted to be a real British person so I toughed it out. We ate "dinner" lunch at La Tasca. It has yummy authentic Spanish tapas. Parts of downtown reminded me of SoHo in New York. Cobblestone lined the streets and some of the stores even have doors in Soho. I really enjoyed being back in a city environment. I had a great day and a great tour guide!

So far my time in the UK has been unbelievable! I had my first Christmas with my boyfriend and his family. It was amazing. His family is so welcoming and they make me feel like I am right at home. I am so lucky to have them while I am here. They made my first Christmas unforgettable. I felt like one of the little kids you see in a movie on Christmas morning running down the stairs. Since I do not celebrate Christmas back at home I could not tell you many differences between it USA and UK style. Something different they do in the UK is called boxing day. Boxing day is kinda like "black friday".
I am almost back on a normal sleep schedule. The first day I got here I was exhausted I tried to stay up as late as I could to got to bed at a normal hour so I could have a normal sleep pattern. I still wake up or get tired at random hours. Overall, adjusting to the time difference is not so bad.
The food is really different here. For starters the chocolate is amazing. I do not think I could ever go back to eating American chocolate. They eat a lot of meat and do not have the same brands of food. Chips are a major thing here aka really good fries. We had Chinese for dinner one night and they even came with the meal. The nutritional facts are written differently. Everywhere I go I see Mince pie... something I have yet to try.

Life in the UK is easier than American life in some ways. The tax is already added in to the price of an item at the store, so when you go to pay you don't pay more then what it says on the ticket. At the movies, you choose your seat when you buy the tickets. You do not have to show up to the theater early to get good seats.

I am still adjusting to the money here, they use a lot of coins and not bills. I still do not know which way to look when crossing the road and sometimes walk to the drivers seat thinking it is the passenger side. Across-the-board these last few days have been somewhat surreal, exciting, and thrilling. I look forward to what is to come.

A: Getting a Visa.

Honestly, getting a visa has been the hardest part of this whole process. I have talked to several other people who have done this and they all agree. You need a CAS number to obtain the visa for this program that does not come until really late in the process. No one is really there to help to get it or to call with questions you may have. The study abroad office will answer you questions to the best of their knowledge, but since rules about getting a visa change so often they may not be up to speed with the right answers. It is really confusing if you talk to different people too because they all give you different information and you dont know who to listen to. It is important you check processing times of your local embassy before you do the application. You may need to rush it or make an appointment and do it in person. I did the normal visa application and everyone told me it would be fine, but I got an email from the embassy saying they were delayed because of Sandy. I then had to go to the embassy and talk to someone. Eventually, I ended up paying extra to rush it. Make sure when you check processing times before you choose what application to do you also look at the date the processing times were posted. A natural disaster, like Sandy, can changes them in an instant. Get help with your visa. Make sure you have all the proper paperwork done before you submit it. Be familiar with the rules. Be prepared to be independent throughout this process.
I also picture the distance from Harrow to London to be like getting to a outer borough of Manhattan. You are able to take public transportation to central London and arrive in about 45 minutes. I imagine the buildings to be attached and homes to be in the style of brownstones. There also may be some cobblestone roads and old architecture. Some famous people from Harrow are James Blunt, Billy Idol, and Sir Elton John.
A: I chose the University of Westminster for several reasons. One: the location- UWM Harrow campus is located right outside of central London. Two: the language- besides the adorable accent the primary language in the UK is english. Three: an internship- UWM exchange is the only exchange program FIT offers that allows you to have a internship with a leading fashion company. Four: travel and explore- I have not been to europe or really gone off on my own to a place I know nothing about and explored a new culture before. Five: friends and support- I have made several friends over the summers who live all over the UK; going to a place on my own is sorta scary so it is nice knowing I will have people to support me while I am there.

Luckily,I have had the opportunity to talk to Meaghan about her experience. She has provided me with a list of tips and tricks that may help those of you going in the future... I know they sure have helped me better prepare!

Meaghan's Advice...

WHAT TO PACK:
I would pack what you normally would pack for a fall season. Even though it's spring time, you don't get a touch of spring until the last few weeks you are there. Bring lots of layering pieces and sweaters. I would suggest a warm winter coat, a rain trench, and a lighter jacket such as a leather jacket. As for shoes, DON'T go crazy. You are going to want to bring options (like i did, i brought 7 pairs) but don’t do it. Bring the shoes you would wear the most often and wellies (rain boots). For going out at night its still going to be cold, and there is a ton of cobblestone. So, bring a practical heel or if you can wedge because you will not wear stilettos on the tube (subway). Tights were a lifesaver when it came to making outfits day->night so bring a few pairs if that is your kinda thing. Bring a few going out dresses but don't over do it, their pub/bar/club wear is more casual than you think and you wont wear it or you'll be a bit overdressed.

Stock up on your makeup and toiletries before you go. They are going to be more expensive there and especially deodorant they don’t sell in stick only aerosol cans so if you have particular products you use bring those.

You will have an option to buy a bedding package and a kitchen package. I got both. I would definitely suggest investing in the kitchen one. They give you anything you would want or need to make food. It is delivered right to your room and is there when you move in. It saves the stress, spending money, and having to search and then lug pots and pans from different shops back to you room. As for the bedding, you can do that if you like, but they aren't the greatest of quality. You can get affordable bedding/pillows at the Sainsbery’s (place you get your groceries) and they will be better quality. I would suggest bringing either a duvet cover or a quilt or something to put on your bed to make it feel more at home because the rooms, like most dorms, are standard and ugly. You have your own bathroom with toilet and shower in your room (you have no idea how great it really is) so you don’t have to worry about anyone touching your stuff.

WHAT I WISH I KNEW:
Tip #1 would be make friends with your flatmates because they will clue you in on all the cool places to go. They are going to be a lot younger than you (17-18-19) because only first year students are allowed to live in the halls.

Tip #2 is go to the campus bars. There are 2 the SU (sometimes called the Undercroft, but rarely) and Area 51 which was decent. Monday nights is student night to go out, and they go hard. It's in walking distance from the dorm and its cheap drinks and a great time if you are down to get drunk.

Tip #3 is dont be afraid to mingle and talk to randoms. When it comes to strangers its nothing like NY. They are very friendly and when it comes to hanging out, central london, what to order at the bar, how to pay properly etc. they have no problem helping you out. And they love to hear the accent and the fact that we are clueless, so they wont mind it. Sainsbery's is the grocery store that everyone shops at. Its in walking distance (kinda like from FIT to Kaufman). They sell reusable bags. Buy them! or bring your own, you will thank yourself when having to lug you stuff back to the halls, especially cause its always raining.

Tip #4 is enjoy the boy’s accents, they are a beautiful thing and when you go to bars your American accent will get you attention whether you are looking for or not.

Tip #5 Restaurants are different there. 90% of them are a kind where you seat yourself, the menus are on the table, the tables are numbered, and one by one you go to the bar you order your own meal and pay for it there individually. Its served to your table. Its cool cause you can hang as long as you want and the paying aspect is already done with and you don’t have to deal with the check. Make sure you always have all picture forms of ID on you (fit id, Westminster id, drivers license) because if you use American cards they check to make sure the names match on everything, also most the highstreet stores in central London (urban outfitters, topshop, forever 21..) have student discounts.

TRAVEL:I did travel. I did a weekend trip to Liverpool. Then in April I did 9 days in Italy where 3 of my friends and I traveled from Venice, Florence, then Rome. Then we did 4 days in Paris. In the orientation they give you a bunch of advice when it comes to traveling but some good sites were studentuniverse.com for flights and hostelworld.com for booking hostels (which I stayed in, in each city.) If you want to know specifics about places or booking things or anything let me know.

CLASSES:The professors are tough. Most will off the bat be tough on you because they aren't the biggest fans of having foreigners (especially Americans) in their classes. The students are in blocks so they all know each other (like our art students) so they do a lot of group work. Don’t expect to be babied or coached through it. There. There is no attendance policy or homework. You have exams and projects that you are expected to work on and research and everything on your own. The library is 24 hours so take advantage. Don’t let the professors intimidate you and participation is encouraged but when it comes to challenging them, that’s not exactly kosher. If you have questions they let you set up one on one meetings with them on your off time, which is really really helpful when final papers/projects are assigned.
